Bitcoin Explained
The original cryptocurrency that started the digital asset revolution.
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is the world's first cryptocurrency, a form of electronic cash that operates without central authority. Created in 2009 by an unknown person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin introduced the concept of blockchain technology.
As a decentralized digital currency, Bitcoin transactions are verified by network nodes through cryptography and recorded on a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. The cryptocurrency has a fixed supply limit of 21 million coins, making it a deflationary asset by design.
Did you know? The smallest unit of a bitcoin is called a "satoshi" and equals 0.00000001 BTC.
How Bitcoin Works
Blockchain Technology
Bitcoin's blockchain is a distributed ledger that records all transactions across a network of computers. Each block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block, transaction data, and a timestamp.
Mining Process
New bitcoins are created through mining, a process where computers solve complex mathematical problems. Miners are rewarded with transaction fees and newly minted bitcoins.
Security Features
Bitcoin uses cryptographic techniques to secure transactions, control the creation of new units, and verify the transfer of assets without relying on central authorities.
Halving Events
Approximately every four years, the reward for mining new blocks is halved, reducing the rate at which new bitcoins are created and enforcing scarcity.
